Following forecasts of flooding in many states in 2024 raining season by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako, has issued a warning to 22 states in Nigeria regarding the possibility of significant flooding over a five-day period.
The flooding is predicted to begin on Tuesday, 16th July and continue until Saturday, 20th July 2024.
Dr Iziaq Salako stated in an interview Wednesday that the identified locations and their surrounding areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall, which could potentially lead to flooding during the predicted timeframe.
Dr Salako provided a list of the affected regions: Adamawa (Gbajili, Ganye); Abia (Eziama, Arochukwu); Anambra (Onitsha); Akwa Ibom (Uyo, Upenekang, Oron, Edor, Eket, Obianga, Etinan); Bauchi (Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi); Bayelsa (Letugbene); Borno (Maiduguri); Cross River (Ikom, Calabar, Itigidi, Akpap); Nasarawa (Udeni, Tunga); and the Federal Capital Territory (Abaji, Bwari).
The Minister commented on the Lagdo Dam, stating: "Should any issues arise concerning the Lagdo Dam, the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation would be notified. Currently, I am unaware of any such reports. Typically, any relevant information would also be relayed to us at a national level."
